Named after its original location at Ingólfstræti 8, the gallery has developed an influential program over nearly three decades, bringing together a group of artists whose practices are connected by conceptual rigor and an intellectually driven approach. The gallery represents twenty three artists working across sculpture, painting, drawing, video, textile, installation, and performance, positioning i8 as a central platform within Iceland’s contemporary art landscape and an active participant in international discourse.

In 2009, i8 Gallery relocated to its current space near Reykjavík Harbor, directly opposite the Reykjavík Art Museum. The gallery was also instrumental in the 2017 opening of the Marshall House, a renovated 1948 industrial building that functions as a cultural hub and is home to Studio Ólafur Elíasson and an experimental satellite exhibition space. Continuing its expansion, i8 opened a second venue, i8 Grandi, in 2022 within the Marshall House, dedicated to extended, single artist presentations. The program was inaugurated by Alicja Kwade and has since included year long exhibitions by B.
