Cheim & Read was founded in New York in 1997 by John Cheim and Howard Read and became widely known for museum quality exhibitions that placed recent work in dialogue with historically significant art, working directly with major artists, foundations, and estates including Lynda Benglis, Louise Bourgeois, Sean Scully, and Matthew Wong. First opened in Chelsea with a Louise Bourgeois and Jenny Holzer exhibition, the gallery later operated from 547 West 25th Street in a Richard Gluckman designed space and expanded its curatorial ambitions through monographic shows and a substantial publication program producing more than ninety catalogues, while also handling secondary market private sales informed by long term connoisseurship and deep archival expertise. Cheim & Read concluded its public exhibition programming in 2023 and, while winding down operations, continued offering works privately through spring 2024, remaining open by appointment at 547 West 25th Street with ongoing promotion and placement of a group of program artists set to continue via Bueno & Co thereafter.
