Crown Point Press is a San Francisco based print publisher and studio founded in 1962 by Kathan Brown, known internationally for its role in advancing etching as a contemporary art medium. Located on Hawthorne Street near the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, it combines a working printmaking studio with a public facing gallery that presents regular exhibitions focused on prints and related works.
The press invites a small number of artists each year to produce new editions, working through a traditional process in which artists draw on copper plates and printers ink and print them by hand. Alongside its publishing programme, Crown Point Press is also associated with printmaking education through its Magical Secrets books and workshops, and its editions are held in major institutional collections including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
