Galería Juana de Aizpuru

Galería Juana de Aizpuru is a landmark Spanish contemporary art gallery originally founded in Seville in 1970, and now based in Madrid. From its inception, the gallery pursued a dual mission of promoting Spanish artists abroad while introducing leading international figures to audiences in Spain. During the final years of the Franco dictatorship, it established a reputation for ambition and openness by organizing exhibitions in the 1970s with artists such as Frank Stella, Diane Arbus, Richard Hamilton, Andy Warhol, Eduardo Chillida, Antoni Tàpies, Manolo Millares, and Robert Rauschenberg, helping to shape a more outward looking cultural climate.

Following Spain’s transition to democracy, the gallery expanded its international reach and became a regular presence at major art fairs from the early 1980s onward, including Art Cologne, Art Basel, ArtChicago, and later Frieze, Paris Photo, and Art Basel Miami Beach. Founder Juana de Aizpuru played a central role in the development of Spain’s contemporary art infrastructure, notably as the driving force behind the creation of ARCO Madrid and later through her involvement in the BIACS Foundation and the Seville Biennial. A Madrid location opened in 1983, and both the Madrid and Seville galleries operated in parallel until the Seville space closed in 2006.
