Gallery 1957 is a contemporary art gallery founded in 2016 by Marwan Zakhem on Ghana’s Independence Day. With locations in Accra and London, the gallery is dedicated to fostering international exchange between West African art practices and the global art scene. It operates across three spaces in Accra alongside a London location opened in 2020, creating platforms that connect local artistic production with international audiences.
The gallery presents exhibitions, installations, and performances by significant artists from Ghana, the wider African continent, and the diaspora. Its activities extend beyond exhibitions to include global gallery partnerships, an artist residency program, public talks, participation in art fairs, off site and site specific projects, and an active publishing initiative. In 2021, Gallery 1957 reinforced its commitment to equity and representation with the launch of the Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize, the first award dedicated to women artists living and working in Africa, underscoring its broader role in cultural development in Ghana and beyond.
