Goodman Gallery is a contemporary art gallery founded in Johannesburg in 1966, emerging during South Africa’s apartheid era with a commitment to challenging racial exclusion and supporting artists whose practices engage critical dialogue and social change. From its early years, the gallery distinguished itself by exhibiting artists of all backgrounds and by positioning contemporary art as a space for cultural and political reflection within a divided society.

Since 2008, under the ownership and direction of Liza Essers, Goodman Gallery has undergone significant international expansion. It now operates spaces in Johannesburg and Cape Town, alongside a London gallery in Mayfair opened in 2019, establishing a sustained presence in the European art scene. Representing a roster of internationally established and emerging artists from Africa, its diaspora, and the wider Global South, the gallery has maintained a regular presence at major international art fairs since the 1980s and continues to play an influential role in shaping contemporary art discourse and global market visibility.
