Gypsum is a contemporary art gallery based in Cairo, founded in 2013. The gallery is dedicated to addressing social, political, and formal questions through the work of a group of thirteen international artists whose practices span a wide range of media. Its program emphasizes rigor, research, and sustained engagement, with a strong focus on building long term, collaborative relationships with its artists while contributing to critical discourse within and beyond the regional art context.
In addition to its exhibition program, Gypsum extends its mission through publishing and research initiatives. Gypsum Books, launched in 2020, is a bilingual platform that produces original and reactivated content by gallery artists and invited contributors, while Gypsum Bursaries, established in 2022, provides stipends and mentorship to support artistic research leading to publication. Artists represented by the gallery are included in major regional and international collections, including the Centre Pompidou, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim in the United States and Abu Dhabi, the British Museum, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Castello di Rivoli, and other leading institutions across Europe and the Middle East.
