Hammer Galleries is a historic art gallery based in New York, founded in 1928 by industrialist and philanthropist Dr. Armand Hammer. The gallery first gained international attention in the 1930s through influential exhibitions of Karl Fabergé’s Russian Imperial Easter Eggs and initially specialized in Russian icons, Imperial porcelains, and rare decorative art objects. These early programs established Hammer Galleries as an important presence within the city’s cultural and collecting circles.
Beginning in the 1960s, the gallery shifted its focus toward nineteenth and twentieth century European and American art, building a strong reputation in Impressionist and Modern masters. Under the long term leadership of Howard Shaw, who joined the gallery in 1981, Hammer Galleries has continued to present museum quality, research driven exhibitions, including projects such as Van Gogh in Paris, Matisse and Picasso, and Objects in Space: Léger, Miró, Calder. Each exhibition is supported by scholarly catalogs and reflects the gallery’s ongoing commitment to historical depth, connoisseurship, and rigorous presentation.
