KEWENIG is an international, family run contemporary art gallery founded in 1986 as Jule Kewenig Galerie in Frechen near Cologne. Originally rooted in the Rhineland, the gallery has developed into a multi location operation with its main base in Berlin and a second exhibition space in Palma de Mallorca. In 2013, KEWENIG established its Berlin headquarters on the Museumsinsel in a townhouse dating from 1688, one of the city’s oldest surviving buildings, underscoring the gallery’s strong engagement with architectural and historical contexts.
Alongside its central Berlin space, the gallery operates a Schaulager for large scale installations in a former power substation in Berlin Moabit and maintains a long standing presence in Palma de Mallorca within a thirteenth century medieval chapel. While the program initially focused on Arte Povera, it has expanded over time to include artists emerging from the 1960s to the present, encompassing painting and conceptual practices and fostering dialogue across generations and cultures. Today, KEWENIG is led by Jule Kewenig in Palma and by Justus Kewenig in Berlin, continuing the gallery’s legacy into its next generation.
