Taka Ishii Gallery is a leading contemporary art gallery based in Tokyo with additional locations in Kyoto and Maebashi. Founded in 1994, the gallery has built a sustained and influential program that introduces international contemporary artists to Japanese audiences while providing an important global platform for emerging Japanese artists alongside established figures. Although its origins are closely tied to photography, the gallery’s program has evolved to encompass a wide range of media, reflecting practices that extend beyond the photographic while maintaining a strong conceptual foundation.
The gallery presents approximately eight solo and group exhibitions each year, accompanied by catalogs and artists’ books, with a particular commitment to supporting emerging Japanese artists. Its main exhibition space is located at complex665 in Roppongi, complemented by Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film, established in 2011, which focuses on historical exhibitions of pre and postwar Japanese photography and film. In recent years, the gallery has expanded its institutional presence with new branches in Kyoto and Maebashi in 2023, as well as an additional exhibition space in Kyobashi, Tokyo, opened in November 2024, reinforcing its role within both national and international art contexts.
