Xavier Hufkens is a Brussels based contemporary art gallery founded in 1987 and widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading spaces for international contemporary art. From its beginnings in an unrefurbished warehouse, the gallery developed a rigorous, multi generational program with a strong focus on mid career and emerging artists, playing a key role in introducing influential international figures to Belgium. Early in its history, the gallery presented first Belgian exhibitions by artists such as Antony Gormley, Félix González Torres, and Rosemarie Trockel, establishing its reputation for curatorial foresight.
Over time, Xavier Hufkens became the longest standing representative for artists including Louise Bourgeois, Roni Horn, and Thomas Houseago, while continuing to expand its program and physical presence. After relocating to a nineteenth century townhouse in Ixelles in 1992, the gallery grew to encompass multiple spaces, opening a second location in 2013 and a third on rue Van Eyck in 2020, alongside new artist representations such as Lynda Benglis and Huma Bhabha. Today, the gallery operates across three locations in Brussels, with ongoing collaborations with artists including Walter Swennen, Tracey Emin, and Sterling Ruby, and entered a new phase marked by the architectural expansion and reopening of its St Georges space in 2022, complemented by an expanded digital program.
